Mountain Lions double up Falcons behind three home runs

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Young Harris College hit three home runs as the Mountain Lions took the finale of their Peach Belt Conference baseball series with the University of Montevallo 12-6 Sunday (March 2) afternoon at Johnson Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 8-10 overall and to 1-5 in the Peach Belt while the Falcons fell to 12-6 and 5-4. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (March 4) with a 5 p.m. non-conference game against North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C.

Young Harris jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead on a home run by Trey Rogers. It was his second of the season. The Mountain Lions added two runs in the second on RBI singles by Jack Morrow and Adam Moore.

The Falcons took a 5-4 lead after they pushed across two runs in the second and three more in the third, but Young Harris took control of the game as they scored four times off Montevallo starter Alex Pondick (3-1) in the fifth to open an 8-5 lead. Moore, who went 3-for-5,  hit a two-run homer – his team-leading fifth of 2014 - and Bowen Klosinski contributed a two-run double to left-center field.

Montevallo got a run back in the sixth, but Young Harris answered with Tom Valichka's leadoff homer in the seventh to take a 9-6 lead. It was the first long ball of the season by Valichka, who went 4-for-5. The Mountain Lions added three insurance runs – all unearned - in the ninth.

Moore (1-1) earned the win with four relief innings while Donald Frew earned a save with two scoreless innings.
