MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo rallied late in both Peach Belt Conference baseball games to sweep a doubleheader against Young Harris College Saturday (March 1) afternoon at Johnson Field.
The Falcons scored an unearned run in bottom of the ninth to claim the opener 5-4 - the Mountain Lions' fifth one-run defeat of 2014 - before scoring five runs in the seventh and eighth innings of the nightcap to win 13-6.
Montevallo improved to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the league while Young Harris fell to 7-10 and 0-5. The teams conclude their weekend series with a 1 p.m. Central time game Sunday (March 2).
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on Jack Morrow's third homer of the season. Adam Moore led off the second with his fourth round tripper of 2014 and Tom Valichka drove in another run with a double down the right-field line.
Montevallo would score four unanswered runs, before Young Harris tied the game at 4 on Valichka's RBI grounder in the eighth. However, the Falcons scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Dane Hutcheon.
Moore and Trey Rogers had two hits for the Mountain Lions. Aron McRee (1-0) earned the win while Tyler Isbell took the loss.
The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first four innings of game two. Young Harris scored single runs in the first and second innings before scoring twice in the third and fourth. Moore had an RBI single in the first before Zach Wall led off the second with a home run. David Atwood contributed a two-run double to left in the third before Morrow drove in a run with a fourth-inning triple and Moore singled through the left side.
Montevallo scored three times in the fifth inning before a Falcons scored five runs in the seventh. Jackson Slaid, who added a two-run homer in the eighth, gave Montevallo the lead for good at 8-with a two-run single.
Moore, Wall, and Spencer Thomas collected two hits for the Mountain Lions. Edward Brandsema (1-3) earned the win in relief, while Isbell (1-2) took the loss.
