BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to break open its non-conference baseball game with Young Harris College as the Tornados defeated the Mountain Lions 15-5 Tuesday (March 18) afternoon at Gil Coan Field.
The Tornados improved to 12-14 while the Mountain Lions fell to 12-15. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (March 19) with a 3 p.m. game against Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.
Brevard took a 2-0 lead on Hunter Donaldson's two-run homer to right field in the second inning. Young Harris got a run back in the third on a Spencer Thomas' double down the left-field line. Young Harris took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth on a Zach Odom's two-run double to left-center field.
The Tornados scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to open a 5-3 lead. Donaldson tied the game on his sacrifice fly while Brayden Morris, who went 3-for-5, had a run-scoring single. Chad Fisher added an RBI ground out. Brevard broke the game open with a six-run fifth to take an 11-3 advantage. The big hit was a bases-clearing double to center by Matthew Proffitt, who went 3-for-6 with 5 RBI.
Young Harris scored its runs on a fielder's choice by Trey Rogers and a single to left by Jack Morrow in the seventh.
Adam Morrow, Rogers and David Atwood each collected two of the 11 Young Harris hits.
Young Harris starter Travis Donahoo (1-1) took the loss while reliever Dustin Haithcox (2-0) got the win for Brevard.
