HARROGATE, Tenn. – Young Harris College had 10 extra-base hits – six doubles and four home runs – as the Mountain Lions defeated Lincoln Memorial University 17-9 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday (March 19) evening at Hennon Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 13-15 and will open a Peach Belt Conference weekend series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 22) against Armstrong Atlantic State University at Zell B. Miller Field.
Young Harris scored at least a run, including nine in the third, in each of the first six inning as the Mountain Lions jumped out to a 17-4 lead.
Trey Rogers led off the second with a homer to left field – his fourth of the season – to tie the game at 3 for the Mountain Lions.
Young Harris sent 12 batters to the plate in the decisive third inning as the Mountain Lions collected seven hits. Rogers, who was 2-for-5, gave Young Harris a 4-3 lead with his double down the left-field line. Dom Wyshinski, who was 2-for-4, added his first homer of 2014 – a three-run blast to right-center field – before Rudnik, who went 3-for-6, added his own three-run homer – his fourth of the year - to left-center field. Jack Morrow, who went 5-for-5 with two doubles, closed out the inning with a two-run homer – his fifth of the season – to right-center field.
Adam Moore and Morrow had back-to-back sacrifice flies in the fifth while Troy Kizer and Zeke Gribble drove in runs in the sixth to complete the scoring for the Mountain Lions.
Cody Beck (2-3) earned the win while Brandon Jean (2-1) took the loss. The eight Young Harris pitchers used in the game tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts.
