Mountain Lions declaw Bears 59-22

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College limited Truett-McConnell College to seven first-half points as the Mountain Lions recorded a 59-22 non-conference women's basketball victory Saturday (Dec. 6) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions snapped their two-game losing streak as they improved to 3-3. Young Harris will return to action after exams when they travel to Lakeland, Florida, for a 2 p.m. contest Saturday (Dec. 13) against Florida Southern College.

Young Harris set records for fewest points allowed (22), surpassing the previous low of 31 by Barber-Scotia College during the 2011-12 season. The Mountain Lions also set a new standard as they recorded 22 steals.

The Mountain Lions, which led from start to finish, took a 2-0 lead on Peyton Robertson's jumper in the paint before the Bears tied the game at 2 on a layup by Rhande Haskett with 17:33 remaining. It would be the last field goal for Truett-McConnell, which hit just 10.5 percent of its shots (2-of-19) in the opening 20 minutes, until Natalie Johnson's layup with 37 seconds before the half.

Young Harris jumpstarted its offense as they turned 13 Truett-McConnell turnovers in the first half into 18 points as the Mountain Lions, who held the Bears without a point for almost 13 minutes,  took a 29-7 lead at the half.

Young Harris forced Truett-McConnell into 32 turnovers and scored 40 points off them. The Mountain Lions led by as many as 37 points in the second half. The Bears, which shot 20.6 percent (7-of-34) from the floor, had two more field goal attempts (34) than turnovers (32).

All but one player that saw action for the Mountain Lions scored. Briana Bell paced Young Harris with 13 points and a team-high four steals. Rachel Harrell also finished in double figures as she had 10 points and added three steals. Amanda Okodugha added six points for Young Harris while Shaquaya Daniels, Chan Fann and Meghan McQuade each tallied five.
