Late field goal rallies Armstrong State past Young Harris 52-51 in PBC opener

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Shermika Harris' jumper with 1:08 remaining gave Armstrong State University a 52-51 come-from-behind Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Young Harris College Thursday (Dec. 18) evening at Alumni Arena.

The Pirates improved to 3-6 overall and to 1-1 inside the league while the Mountain Lions fell to 3-5 and 0-1. Young Harris continues its road trip Saturday (Dec. 20) with a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest against Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida.

Young Harris used seven unanswered points to open a 50-44 lead on a Kaycee Cash layup with 4:59 remaining in the contest, but that would be the final field goal for the Mountain Lions. Armstrong battled back to tie the game at 50 on a Brigitta Barta layup with 2:14 left.

In a game that saw 10 lead changes and seven ties, Young Harris retook the lead at 51-50 as Jada Williams hit the back end of two free throws with 1:16 to play, but Harris gave the Pirates the lead for good on Harris' jumper eight seconds later. The Mountain Lions had two changes to retake the lead in the final minute, but couldn't convert.

Young Harris took a 29-23 lead at the half as the Mountain Lions, who are ranked third in NCAA Division II statistics in scoring defense (51.4 ppg), limited the Pirates to 25 percent shooting (6-of-24) from the floor.

Barta led the Pirates with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Harris and Amber Howell each tossed in 10 apiece. Howell also grabbed six rebounds.

Peyton Robertson led the Mountain Lions with 14 points and six rebounds. Rachel Harrell added nine points while Briana Bell added eight points and five rebounds. Shereese Williams led Young Harris with nine rebounds.
