Mountain Lions hold off Saints 48-47 to claim first Peach Belt win

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Peyton Robertson led the Young Harris College women's basketball team with 11 points as the Mountain Lions held off Flagler College 48-47 in a Peach Belt Conference contest Saturday (Dec. 20) afternoon at Flagler Gym.

The Mountain Lions improved to 4-5 overall and to 1-1 in the conference while the Saints fell to 2-6 and 0-2. The Mountain Lions now break for the holidays and will return to action in the new year when they travel to Morrow, Georgia, for a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest against Clayton State University.

After the game was tied at 23 at the half, the Mountain Lions opened up a 36-31 lead on a Chan Fann layup with 9:43 remaining.  However, Teosha Ray nailed a three-pointer to highlight a 6-0 run to give Flagler a 37-36 lead with 7:04 left.

The game that saw eight ties and eight lead changes saw Young Harris take the lead for good 14 seconds later at 37-36 when Rachel Harrell sank a three-pointer of her own.

Robertson converted two free throws with three minutes to go gave the Mountain Lions a 45-40 lead. DeAsha Campbell hit back-to-back field goals for Flagler as the Saints trimmed the lead down to a point (45-44). A Robertson layup and a Jasmine Knight free throw with 23 seconds left gave Young Harris a 48-45 lead.

Treva Mason hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining pulled the Saints to within a point at 48-47. After Knight missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity, the Saints had a chance to win the game, but Campbell's jumper missed as time expired.

"I am so proud of how hard we are playing," said Young Harris interim head coach Matt Stearsman. "This team defends every possession like it may be the last they ever play. We were in the exact same position as we were Thursday. We had a two possession lead late again and this time we dug down and found a way. That says something about the character of this team."

Fann added six points and five rebounds for the Mountain Lions while Jada Williams added six points. Shereese Williams pulled down six rebounds and added four points. Briana Bell added four assists.

Campbell led the Saints with 17 points and seven rebounds while Mason had 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Ray contributed eight points and seven rebounds.
