YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Benedict College recorded a 48-41 non-conference women's basketball victory over Young Harris College Wednesday (Nov. 19) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Tigers improved to 2-0 while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-1. Young Harris hits the road for the first time this season when they travel to Banner Elk, North Carolina, for a 2 p.m. contest at Lees-McRae College Saturday (Nov. 22).
Young Harris, which led by as many as nine points in the opening 20 minutes, settled for a 24-22 halftime lead. The Mountain Lions extended their lead to three points – 28-25 – when Briana Bell hit as three-pointer with 18:20 remaining. It would be the last point the Mountain Lions, who shot 22.7 percent (10-of-44) from the field, for the next 8:47.
Benedict, which only shot 27.6 percent (16-of-58) from the floor themselves, tied the game at 28 when Dorothy Brown hit a three on its next possession. The Tigers took the lead for good at 30-28 on Britenique Harrison's putback with 14:41 left.
The Tigers extended their lead to six points (34-28) before the Mountain Lions would break their drought on a Peyton Robertson layup with 9:43 to play. Young Harris pulled within two points (41-39) with 4:04 remaining on two free throws by Robertson, who was the only player for either team to score in double figures with 14.
Benedict scored the next five points to take a 46-39 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by London Richardson with 80 seconds left.
Richardson and Maya Nelson led Benedict with nine points while Kristine Lesane added nine rebounds.
