YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Despite a career-high 31 points from C.J. Wilson, Young Harris College's late rally wasn't enough as Anderson (S.C.) University held on for an 83-82 non-conference men's basketball victory over the Mountain Lions Wednesday (Nov. 19) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Trojans improved to 1-2 while the Mountain Lions leveled their record at 1-1. Young Harris now hits the road for its next seven games, starting with a 2 p.m. neutral site contest Saturday (Nov. 22) in Macon, Georgia, against Saint Leo University.
Anderson took its largest lead – nine points (74-65) – when Nick Jackson hit a three-pointer with 6:33 remaining. It was one of 15 long-distance shots the Trojans hit as they shot 60 percent (15-of-25) from 3-point range. The 15 three-pointers were the second most allowed by the Mountain Lions in the program's history.
Young Harris and Anderson matched shots down the stretch as the Trojans maintained a six-point point lead (83-77) with 18 seconds remaining. The Mountain Lions trimmed the lead down to a point (83-82) with 2.8 seconds remaining as Wilson hit five consecutive free throws.
D.J. McGowan had a chance to ice the game, but missed two free throws with 2.0 seconds left. After Bjorn Walker grabbed the rebound, Wilson's heave from 60 feet that would have won the game for the Mountain glanced off the rim as time expired.
"I thought it was a terrific comeback," said Young Harris head coach Pete Herrmann. "But we just came up short."
Kevin Altidor added 24 points for the Mountain Lions of 9-of-10 shooting from the floor while Herdie Lawrence added 11 points.
Nick Jackson led the Trojans with 21 points while Lex Davis and McGowan added 12 apiece while Rakish Taylor chipped in 10 more.
