MACON, Ga. – Herdie Lawrence hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 74 seconds remaining and a blocked shot by Kevin Altidor on a last-second shot propelled Young Harris College to a 64-63 non-conference men's basketball victory over Saint Leo University Saturday (Nov. 22) afternoon at the Central Georgia Technical College Gym.
The Mountain Lions improved to 2-1 and continues their road trip with a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday (Nov. 25) against Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Lions slipped to 2-2.
It was a game that see sawed back and forth between two teams as neither led by more than eight points during the contest and neither squad led by more the four points in the second half. The game featured 11 lead changes and nine ties.
Young Harris led 33-31 at the half but saw Saint Leo take a four-point lead (58-54) when Devin Crisosto hit a layup with 4:59 left. C.J. Wilson tied the game up at 58 for the Mountain Lions as he hit a three-pointer and a free throw on the next two YHC possessions.
Young Harris, which hit 11 three-pointers and shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from long distance, took the lead at 61-58 at when Ben Waterhouse nailed a three-pointer with 3:27 to play. However, the Lions got two free throws by Marcus Dewberry and three-pointer of their own by Cale Girten to retake the lead at 63-61 with 1:45 remaining.
Lawrence then hit the go-ahead three-pointer from Lawrence off an assist by Wilson on the next YHC possession to give the Mountain Lions a 64-63 lead. Saint Leo had three chances to retake the lead but committed a turnover and missed two shots. The last shot by the Lions taken by Ron Foxx as time was running out was blocked by Altidor to preserve the Mountain Lion victory.
"It was a well-played, hard-fought game between the two teams," said YHC head coach Pete Herrmann. "We earned the victory tonight on the defensive end. Everybody contributed in the win."
Wilson, who also had eight assists, and Lawrence led the Mountain Lions with 15 points each while Altidor added 12 more. Waterhouse had nine points and dished out five assists while Sam Mike added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Crisosto led the Lions with 16 points while Lucas Johnson tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds. Foxx also finished in double figures with 12 points.
