Williams, Bell lead Young Harris past Brenau 67-64 in opener

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Jasmine Knight's jumper with 87 seconds remaining gave Young Harris College the lead for good as the Mountain Lions held off Brenau University 67-64 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0 while the Golden Tigers fell to 2-2. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Nov. 19) when they host Benedict College in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the YHC Basketball Arena.

Young Harris opened up its largest lead of the game – 13 points (61-48) – after Shaquaya Daniels hit two free throws with 7:50 remaining in the contest. However, Brenau outscored the Mountain Lions 14-1 over the next five minutes to tie the game at 62 when Anikee Combee hit both free throws with 2:27 to play.

Knight nailed a short jumper off a Daniels assist – one of six in the game - to give the Mountain Lions the lead for good with 1:27 remaining. The Mountain Lions forced Brenau into a turnover on its next possession and Daniels connected on a layup with 32 seconds remaining to give YHC a 66-62 lead. Young Harris scored 14 points in the second half off 12 turnovers by the Golden Tigers.

Shereese Williams scored 13 of her career-high 16 points in the second half as she connected on six of her eight attempts from the floor while Briana Bell added 14 points in her first game in an YHC uniform. Williams also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Kalin Williams led Brenau with 22 points and eight rebounds while Autumn Dodson added 14 points.
