Eighth-inning rally gives Young Harris a 6-5 win over West Georgia

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. –  Young Harris College scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Mountain Lions rallied for a 6-5 non-conference baseball victory over the University of West Georgia Tuesday (April 9) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 18-17 while the Wolves fell to 20-18. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 13) when they travel to Americus, Ga., for a 1 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern State University.

With the Wolves holding a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the eighth, Dom Wyshinski started the rally with an infield single and Tom Valichka reached on a fielding error before Zach Bricknell, who went 3-for-4, hit an 0-2 pitch from West Georgia starter Steve McClure (0-1), over the right field fence to tie the game at 5. Bricknell leads the Peach Belt with 12 home runs.

Bowen Klosinski, who went 2-for-4, continued the rally with a single through the right side. Tyler Spradlin, who pinch ran for Klosinski, stole second base and then moved over to third when reliever Max Aeschlimann threw the ball into center field on a failed pickoff attempt. Spencer Thomas followed with a single through the left side of a drawn-in infield to score Spradlin with go-ahead run.

Taylor Topping  (2-3) pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Mountain Lions.

West Georgia took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when John Mark Rhodes, who had reached on a dropped fly ball, scored on a balk from Young Harris starter Travis Donahoo. The Wolves added a run an inning later on a ground out by Harrison Waller before the Mountain Lions tied the game at 2 with two runs in the fourth. Trey Rogers drove a run in on his ground ball before Mike Medori stroked a RBI single to left.

West Georgia retook the lead at 5-2 with a three-run sixth, highlighted by Blake McLemore's two-run homer – his first of the season – to left field. McLemore went 3-for-4 in the game.
