Grizzlies, Mountain Lions split doubleheader

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Georgia Gwinnett College and Young Harris College split a non-conference baseball doubleheader Wednesday (April 24) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Grizzles, who improved to 28-25, won the opener 14-2 as they collected 14 hits off six Young Harris pitchers while the Mountain Lions, who improved to 21-22, tossed their third shutout of the season as Cody Beck (3-3) tossed a five-hitter in a 5-0 victory.

Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 27) when they host Tennessee Temple University in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

The Mountain Lions took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap as David Atwood singled home the first run and Zach Bricknell doubled to right field to score the other run. Young Harris added two unearned runs an inning later on Trey Rogers' single through the left side.

Young Harris scored its final run when Zeke Gribble, who stroked a double to left field, scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning.

Rogers and Gribble led the Mountain Lions with two hits apiece. Beck struck out six as he registered his second complete game of the season.

Georgia Gwinnett broke open game one as they sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring seven runs on six hits. Pat Long and Christian Van Camp hit home runs for the Grizzlies.

Young Harris scored both runs in the first game via the long ball. Atwood hit his fourth home run in 2013 in the third inning while Rogers added his eighth homer in the fifth.

Adam Moore (4-4) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
