BREVARD, N.C. – Young Harris College scored four runs in its final two at-bats as the Mountain Lions rallied for an 8-6 non-conference baseball victory over Brevard College Wednesday (March 27) afternoon at Gil Coan Field.
Young Harris improved to 12-15 while the Tornado fell to 12-23. Young Harris steps back into Peach Belt Conference play Friday (March 29) with a 6 p.m. contest at Zell B. Miller Field against Augusta State University.
Brevard scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the second as the Tornado took advantage of two Young Harris miscues. The Tornado added a run in fourth on a John Slade homer to right-center field.
The Mountain Lions mounted their comeback in the fifth as they scored four times as they took advantage of starter Tyler Lequire's wildness. Bowen Klosinski and Zach Bricknell drove in runs with bases-loaded walks while Zeke Gribble and Adam Moore were hit by pitches to score the other runs.
Brevard would took a 6-4 lead on Matthew Proffitt's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.
Young Harris scored three runs in the top of the eighth off Nick Blackwood (1-4). Dom Wyshinski had an RBI single to left and Tom Valichka's single to center tied the game at 6. Wyshinski would give the Mountain Lions the lead for good when he would score on a wild pitch. The Mountain Lions added an insurance run in the ninth on David Atwood's double to right-center field.
Atwood led the Mountain Lions, who stranded 15 runners, with three hits while Wyshinski and Valichka had two apiece.
Oliver Pratt (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win while Brice Merritt picked up his first save with two scoreless innings. Merritt also recorded four strikeouts.
