YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College smacked a college-record five home runs as the Mountain Lions won the baseball series finale with Brevard College 18-4 Sunday (Feb. 10) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 2-2 while the Tornados fell to 2-2. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (Feb. 12) with a 2 p.m. contest against Reinhardt University in Waleska, Ga.
Young Harris greeted Brevard starter Zach Joyce (0-1) for five runs in the first inning as the first four batters reached on hits. Spencer Thomas led off the inning with a home run to left and Jack Morrow hit the first of his two homers in the game – a two-run blast to left field to give the Mountain Lions a 3-0 lead. David Atwood closed out the scoring with a two-run double to center field.
After Brevard got two runs back in the top of the fourth on a RBI double by Kody Spencer and a run-scoring infield hit by Matthew Proffitt, Young Harris scored three runs in its half of the inning as Dom Wyshinski and Adam Moore each drove in runs. David Atwood led off the fifth with a homer to left to highlight a two-run fifth.
The Mountain Lions scored five times in the sixth to open a 15-2 lead. Mike Medori had a run-scoring single and Rogers added a two-run double before Morrow stroke a three-run homer over the right field fence. Bowen Klosinski had a two-run pinch-hit double just inside the left field line and Tom Valichka had a solo homer to left in a three-run seventh.
Rogers and Atwood led the 17-hit attack for the Mountain Lions with three hits each as every starter but one registered a hit. Morrow, Moore, Wyshinski and Medori each tallied two, Morrow drove in five runs while Atwood finished with 3 RBI.
Adam Moore (1-0) scattered six hits over five innings and struck out seven to earn the win.
