Atwood helps Mountain Lions complete sweep over Hiwassee

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. –  David Atwood collected for four hits and drove in three runs as the Young Harris College baseball team completed the weekend sweep over Hiwassee College Saturday (April 21) afternoon with a 5-3 victory at Zell B. Miller Field on Alumni Weekend.

The Mountain Lions won their sixth consecutive game as they improved to 35-10. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (April 24) when they travel to Athens, Tenn., for a 3 p.m. contest against Tennessee Wesleyan College.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth thanks to a Young Harris error. The Mountain Lions took the lead for good when Atwood connected on his seventh homer of the season and deposited it over the left field fence.  Spencer Thomas and Tom Valichka had reached base on singles in front of Atwood's homers. Young Harris took a 4-1 lead later in the inning when Adam Moore and Jack Morrow hit back-to-back doubles.

Hiwassee got within a run when Chase Hoard hit a two-run homer to right field in the seventh. Young Harris added an insurance run in its half of the seventh on Zach Bricknell's sacrifice fly.

Taylor Topping, the second of five pitchers used by the Mountain Lions, improved to 4-1 with the win, while Cody Beck earned his second save of 2012 as he pitched two scoreless innings.
