ATHENS, Tenn. – Jordan Guida and Jake Stone combined to drive in seven runs as Tennessee Wesleyan College defeated Young Harris College 12-5 in a college baseball game Tuesday (April 24) afternoon at Jack Bowling Field.
The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, improved to 37-11 while the Mountain Lions had their six-game winning streak snapped and fell to 35-11. The two teams will face each other in a 5 p.m. contest Wednesday (April 25) at Zell B. Miller Field in Young Harris, Ga.
Young Harris jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Jack Morrow and Zach Bricknell each had RBI singles. Tennessee Wesleyan tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the first and then broke the game open with a five-run third inning. Guida and Travis Burnside collected two-run hits against Young Harris starter Cody Beck (4-1).
The Mountain Lions scored twice in the fifth to pull within three runs at 7-4. Bricknell drove in his second run with a run-scoring single to center and Young Harris pushed across another run on the play on a fielding error by the center fielder.
The Bulldogs responded in their half of the inning with three runs and two more in the sixth to expand their lead to 12-4. Tennessee Wesleyan got a run on a Tyler Isbell wild pitch and two more on Stone's single through the middle. Guida led off the sixth with a homer to straight-away center and Brad Carpenter had a RBI single.
Young Harris got the final run in the eighth on an infield single by David Atwood.
