Home runs help Mountain Lions sweep Crusaders

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Home runs helped Young Harris College sweep a baseball doubleheader from Tennessee Temple University Friday (April 13) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.

Zach Bricknell hit two home runs as the Mountain Lions held back the Crusaders 6-2 in the opener before Adam Moore's game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth gave Young Harris a 5-4 comeback victory in the nightcap.

The Mountain Lions improved to 31-10 while the Crusaders fell to 12-30-1. The two teams conclude their three-game weekend series with a noon contest Saturday (April 14).

Bricknell gave Young Harris a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one with a solo blast to right field. After the Mountain Lions added a run in the third on David Atwood's sacrifice fly, the Mountain Lions took a 5-0 lead with Bricknell's ninth homer – a three-run shot to right – in the fourth inning. Moore's RBI triple to center in the fifth gave Young Harris a 6-0 lead before the Crusaders pushed across two runs in their final at-bat.

James Mills (2-0) earned the win with four shutout innings while Brice Merritt notched his first save of the season with three innings of relief.

In the second game, Moore connected on the second pitch he saw from Tennessee Temple reliever Josh Daniel and deposited over the left field fence for his eighth homer of the season and gave the Mountain Lions a comeback win.

Young Harris rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4 to send the game into extra innings. Moore added his second RBI triple of the doubleheader and later scored the tying run on a passed ball.

Tennessee Temple had the chance to take the lead in the top of the eighth with the go-ahead run at third base; however, Bricknell, who was playing center field, threw the runner out at home plate on Jon Clayton's line out for an inning-ending double play.

Cody Beck (4-0) earned the win for the Mountain Lions with five innings of scoreless, no-hit relief as he struck out five.
