Mountain Lions dial long distance in 19-7 win over Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – Young Harris College spotted Southern Wesleyan University an early four-run lead before the Mountain Lions roared back for 19 runs in their final four at-bats as Young Harris defeated the Warriors 19-7 in seven innings Monday (April 9) evening at Dr. Keith Connor Field.

The Mountain Lions won their sixth consecutive game as they improved to 29-9 while Southern Wesleyan fell to 19-28. Young Harris returns to Zell B. Miller Field for a 6 p.m. contest Tuesday (April 10) against Columbus State University.

With the Mountain Lions trailing 4-0 after three innings, Young Harris batted around for seven runs in the fourth. David Atwood hit the first of two home runs in the game as he led off with a shot to left field. The Mountain Lions took a 5-4 lead when Tom Valichka cleared the bases with a double to left-center field.  Valichka later scored on Mike Medori's RBI single up the middle.

Young Harris extended its lead to 12-4 as they scored five times in the fifth. Adam Moore hit his seventh homer of the season as he led off the rally with a blast to left. Valichka added another run on a fielder's choice and Medori doubled deep down the left-field line for another score.

The Warriors got two runs back in their half of the inning before Young Harris got them right back in the sixth. The Mountain Lions closed out the game early with their second five-run inning of the contest in the seventh to take a 19-7 lead. Atwood, who has five homers on the season, connected on a three-run  homer to left and Dom Wyshinski added another on a run-scoring infield hit.

Medori, Moore and Zach Bricknell paced Young Harris with three hits apiece while Valichka and Atwood each drove in four runs. Medori also had three RBI.

Justin Cooper (2-0) earned the win with three innings of relief for the Mountain Lions while Southern Wesleyan starter Matthew Large (3-5) absorbed the loss.
