YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College collected 22 hits and scored in all but two innings as the Mountain Lions swept a baseball doubleheader from Mars Hill College Wednesday (March 21) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
Young Harris rallied from an early four-run deficit in the opener to take a 10-5 decision in game one before Jack Morrow and Zach Bricknell each homer in the Mountain Lions' 11-3 win in the nightcap.
The Mountain Lions improved to 21-8 while Mars Hill fell to 10-21. Young Harris returns to action Friday (March 23) with a 6 p.m. home doubleheader against Toccoa Falls College.
The Lions took a 4-0 lead in the second inning of game one. Tommy Scala had a two-run double to right-center before Jacob Rand stroked a two RBI single up the middle.
Young Harris got a run back in its half of the second on a Dom Wyshinski single. The Mountain Lions added two runs in the third on David Atwood's sacrifice fly before Mike Medori scored on a wild pitch. Young Harris tied the game at 4 in the fourth Trey Rogers singled through the right side.
Medori gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good on his two-run single to left. Young Harris broke open the game with a four-run sixth to take a 10-4 lead. Bricknell had a run-scoring single while Wyshinski was hit by a pitch and Spencer Thomas walked with the bases loaded. Zeke Gribble also contributed a RBI single.
Adam Moore (4-2) earned the win with the complete-game effort. He scattered six hits and struck out six. Reliever Tony Hearrell (1-3) absorbed the loss.
Young Harris jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game two off Mars Hill starter Austin Art (0-2). After loading the bases on an error and two walk, Morrow connected on his team-high eighth homer – a grand slam to right-center field. Wyshinski added an RBI single.
Mars Hill scored a run on a Scala hit in the second before the Mountain Lions scored twice on Bricknell's double to right-center in their half of the inning.
The Lions made it 7-3 with two runs in the third on an RBI hit by Matt Mayo and a bases-loaded walk to Zach Honeycutt. Young Harris added single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 9-3 lead. Bricknell led off the fourth with his sixth homer – a shot to right-center – of 2012.
Taylor Topping (2-1) picked up the win as he allowed five hits and struck out three in five innings.
