YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College swept a baseball doubleheader from Toccoa Falls College Monday (March 26) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved as they recorded a 1-0 shutout in the opener and a 6-2 decision in the nightcap. The Eagles fell to 15-12-1. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (March 27) with a 2:30 p.m. contest against North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C.
The only run Young Harris needed in the opener came in the bottom of the sixth inning after Mountain Lion starter Adam Moore (5-2) wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam with no one out in the top half. After loading the bases on two singles and a fielding error, Moore got the next two batters to strike out before Jordan Couillard to end the threat with a ground out.
Trey Rogers led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to right-center field on the first pitch he saw from Toccoa Falls starter Justin Key. David Atwood sacrificed Rogers over to third base. Rogers scored the game's only run on Jack Morrow's triple to center field.
Moore allowed just three hits while striking out a season-high nine.
Toccoa Falls took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on an unearned run. The Mountain Lions tied the game at 1 in their half of the inning. Rogers singled up the middle, moved to third on Atwood's double to left-center. Rogers scored on Morrow's sacrifice fly.
Young Harris scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead. Atwood had a sacrifice fly in the third and Rogers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded an inning later.
After Andrew Thorne's solo homer in the sixth trimmed the Young Harris lead. However, the Mountain Lions broke the game up in the half of the inning with three runs. Zach Bricknell tripled home the first run while Rogers and Atwood contributed RBI singles.
Starter Tyler Isbell (4-2) earned the win with six strikeouts and allowing just three hits in 4 2/3 innings.
