YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Young Harris College baseball team won their fourth consecutive game as the Mountain Lions used an 18-hit attack en route to a 19-6 victory in seven innings over Indiana University of Pennsylvania Sunday (March 11) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 18-6 while the Crimson Hawks fell to 5-6-1. Young Harris returns to action at 3 p.m. Monday (March 12) when they face Waldorf College.
Trey Rogers and David Atwood each collected three hits and drove in four runs for the Mountain Lions. Spencer Thomas and Tom Valichka also drove in three runs as Young Harris batted around in the first and third innings.
Josh Rudnik (4-0) struck out eight in six innings to pick up the win for Young Harris. Evan Phillips (1-1) surrendered 11 hits and 13 runs in 2 2/3 innings for Indiana (Pa.).
Young Harris, unlike the night before against the Crimson Hawks, jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. Atwood drove the first run in on a single before Zach Bricknell knocked in two more with his triple to right-center field. Jack Morrow added a run-scoring ground out before Valichka stroked his first homer – a three-run blast to right field – of the season.
IUP got two runs back in the second on a two-run triple inside the right-field line before the Mountain Lions broke the game wide open with a six-run third inning. Thomas had a sacrifice fly and Rogers added a RBI-infield single. Atwood closed out the scoring with his second homer – a three-run shot to left - of the season.
Young Harris made the score 16-2 with three runs in the fourth inning on Rogers' bases-clearing double to left-center. The Mountain Lions added three more runs an inning later. Thomas had a two-run single to center and Mike Medori followed with a RBI single to center.
