Mountain Lions, Warriors split two games

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College and Waldorf College split two baseball games Tuesday (March 13) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

Adam Moore hit a game-ending homer in the bottom of ninth as the Mountain Lions won the opener – the completion of Monday's (March 12) suspended game – 15-14. Waldorf took the final game 11-7.

The Mountain Lions saw their five-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 19-7. The Warriors improved to 9-8. Young Harris returns to action next Tuesday (March 20) with a 4 p.m. contest against No. 12 Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.

Young Harris led the suspended game 4-1 in the top of the five before both teams' offenses cranked up. The teams combined to score in every half inning except for one – the bottom of the seventh.

The Mountain Lions took an 11-5 lead with a five-run outburst in the sixth. Trey Rogers drove in the first run with a single up the middle before Jack Morrow cleared the bases with a double to right-center field. Moore later scored on Spencer Thomas' single up the middle.

Waldorf rallied to take a 12-11 as the Warriors scored four times in the seventh and three more an inning later.  Waldorf took the lead on a bases-loaded walk by Shawn Palmer. The Mountain Lions responded with three runs in the eighth to retake the lead at 14-12. Rogers singled to left to drive in two runs while David Atwood had an RBI single through the right side.

The Warriors rallied in their final at bat to tie the game at 14 with two unearned runs on Jack Bews' sacrifice fly and Lance McFeely's single to left. Moore gave Young Harris the win when he connected on a 1-1 offering from McFeely (0-1) and deposited it down the left field line for his fifth homer of 2012.

Moore (3-2) also earned the win in relief.

In the regularly scheduled game, Young Harris took a 6-2 lead after a four-run fourth. Thomas had a sacrifice fly, Sam Tarlton had a RBI sacrifice bunt and the Mountain Lions scored two other runs on the three Waldorf errors in the inning.

Waldorf took the lead at 7-6 as they scored once in the fifth and added four runs in the sixth. The big blow for the Warriors was a three-run homer to right-center field off reliever Tyler Isbell (3-2). Waldorf added four insurance runs in the eighth to preserve the win for reliever Colin Morgan (3-1).
