YOUNG HARRIS – Adam Moore had a career high 12 strikeouts and pitched a complete game in the opener and Tommy Ferguson came up with a clutch, two-out, bases-loaded, double in the second game to give the Young Harris College baseball team a sweep in its final home series as the Mountain Lions edged Atlanta Christian, 2-1, and 6-5, on Saturday afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
Young Harris (26-20), winners of seven straight, broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the second inning as Evan Carr singled up the middle to begin the frame and Jack Morrow walked on four pitches. Zach Bricknell had a bloop single to center to load the bases. Trey Rogers, who went 2-for-3, delivered a double to left as Carr and Morrow scored to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 advantage.
The Chargers (18-23) cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the top of the third.
However, Moore, who fanned four straight in between the sixth and seventh innings, was dominate on the mound setting a career high in strikeouts with 12 and scattering six hits in surrender a run and one walk in nine complete innings to improve to 6-3.
KC Lorow took the loss in working eight innings. He gave up a pair of runs on six hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
In the second game, Atlanta Christian got a run in the top of the first inning to quickly grab a 1-0 advantage.
Back came Young Harris in the bottom of the inning as Tommy Ferguson began the frame with a base hit through the right side and with one out, David Atwood walked. Carr, who went 2-for-2, ripped a two-out double to the gap in right center to give the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead.
The Chargers loaded the bases with one out in the fourth and came away with four runs on three hits and took advantage of a pair of errors to grab a 5-2 lead.
The Mountain Lions rallied in the bottom of the frame as Rudnik led off the inning with a base hit to right center and took second on a passed ball. Carr singled to right, and Morrow drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Bricknell singled to left, plating Rudnik. With two down, Ferguson, who went 2-for-4, delivered the big hit with a bases-clearing double to left center to give Young Harris a 6-5 advantage.
Tyler Isbell started for the Mountain Lions as he gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts. Oliver Pratt (4-1) earned the win by pitching 2.2 innings and giving up one hit. Brice Merritt picked up his first save of the season by getting the final two outs.
Christian Watford took the loss in surrendering six runs on five hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts in three innings. Kelsey Moore, Steve Ciupak and Justin Herring worked in relief.
