YOUNG HARRIS – Jack Morrow collected three hits and Zach Bricknell and Ryan LaRose each had two as the Young Harris College baseball team opened play at the Chad Gassman Classic with a 19-4 victory over Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a game shortened because of the NCAA mercy rule on Friday at Zell B. Miller Field.
Young Harris (10-9) opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Bricknell walked and advanced to second and third on a throwing error as David Atwood reached base on the play. Atwood stole second and Josh Rudnik, who went 1-for-3, walked to load the bases. Morrow cranked a base hit through the left side to plate Bricknell. Evan Carr, who was 1-for-3, singled to center, scoring Atwood and Rudnik. Adam Moore, who went 1-for-2, doubled to center to plate Morrow to give the Mountain Lions a 4-0 lead.
However, the Crimson Hawks (2-3) plated four runs in the top of the second to tie the game.
Young Harris exploded with six runs on four hits and took advantage of a pair of IUP errors to take a 10-4 lead. The Mountain Lions put the game away with six more runs in the fourth and three in the sixth.
Moore (3-2) started on the mound for Young Harris, going five innings. He surrendered four runs (all unearned) on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Oliver Pratt worked two innings of relief by pitching a one hitter.
Chris Douglas (1-1) took the loss for the Crimson Hawks. He worked 2.2 innings, giving up 10 runs (eight earned) on seven hits with three walks. Mitch Perez and Branden Barnes worked in relief.
The Mountain Lions will play a pair of games on Saturday, March 5 as Young Harris opens the day at the Chad Gassman Classic 2:30 p.m., against Waldorf, and round out the day with a 6:00 p.m., game against Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Waldorf meets Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 11:00 a.m., to start play of the classic at Zell B. Miller Field.
