Mountain Lions rally for 7-6 victory

YOUNG HARRIS – Down by five runs after five innings, the Young Harris College baseball team rallied with two runs in the sixth and four in the eighth to knock off Waldorf College, 7-6, during Sunday’s action in the Chad Gassman Classic at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Warriors (3-2) capitalized on four Young Harris errors in the first inning to grab a 4-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions (11-9) rallied and cut the margin to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the frame as Zach Bricknell, who went 2-for-5, singled to left center to begin the inning and moved to second on a David Atwood ground out. With two outs, Jack Morrow singled to center to plate Bricknell.

Waldorf answered with a run in the top of the second and one in the third inning to take a 6-1 advantage

The score remained, 6-1, until the bottom of the sixth where the Mountain Lions trimmed the deficit to 6-3.

Atwood, who was 2-for-4, opened the inning with an infield hit, but was out at second on a fielder’s choice by Josh Rudnik. Morrow, who went 2-for-5, followed with a double to left to advance Rudnik to third. Evan Carr, who went 3-for-4, singled to left-center to plate Rudnik and Morrow for the two runs in the frame.

Young Harris rallied and took its first lead of the day by plating four runs on three hits to take a 7-6 advantage.

Moore began the inning with a walk and Trey Rogers reached on a fielder’s choice. Zeke Gribble advanced the runners a base on a ground out. Mike Medori singled up the middle to score Moore and Rogers. After a pitching change, Bricknell flied out to right for the first out. Atwood followed with a double to left to plate Medori and Rudnik singled up the middle to score Atwood, giving Young Harris a 7-6 lead.

Rudnik started for the Mountain Lions, going 0.1 of an inning. He gave up four runs (all unearned) one hit with a pair of walks. Brice Merritt was outstanding in relief, working 6.2 innings. He surrendered two runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Oliver Pratt (1-0) took the win in two innings of relief.

Matt Klaus worked 6.1 innings for the Warriors, giving up three runs on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. Bobby Woods and Kasey Krekling pitched in relief.

Young Harris opens the third day of the Chad Gassman Classic at noon on Monday, March 7 against Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Waldorf meets IUP at 3 p.m., and the Mountain Lions conclude the final game of the day at 6:00 p.m., against Waldorf at Zell B. Miller Field.
