YOUNG HARRIS – The Young Harris College baseball team struggled to get much going offensively on Sunday as the Mountain Lions dropped the series to Bloomsburg as the Huskies took the rubber game, 13-3, at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Huskies (7-5) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning by plating an unearned run and added to the advantage with a run in the second to grab an early 2-0 lead.
Young Harris (15-11) answered in the bottom of the second by taking advantage of a pair of walks to tie the game at 2 as Josh Rudnik and Evan Carr, who was 2-for-3, drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning and Adam Moore was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Ryan LaRose grounded into a double play as Rudnik scored. Mike Medori, who went 2-for-4, brought Carr in on a base hit through the left side to tie the game at 2.
Bloomsburg responded in the top of the third with a pair of runs on two hits to take a 4-2 advantage.
The Mountain Lions got a run back in the bottom of the frame as Tommy Ferguson and advanced to second when David Atwood was hit by a pitch. Atwood stole second and Ferguson was thrown out at third trying to steal. Jack Morrow reached on an error, allowing Atwood to score.
Back came Bloomsburg in the top half of the fourth as the Huskies scored a run and extended the margin to 6-3 with a run in the fifth.
The Huskies put the game away in the top of the ninth by plating seven runs on six hits in the ninth for the 13-3 lead.
Taylor Topping (1-2) worked 3.2 innings for Young Harris. He surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits with a pair of walks. Travis Donahoo, Nick Boutwell and Blake Fortune pitched in relief.
Kyle Hunter started for the Huskies, going two innings, giving up two runs on one hit. He also walked a pair. Casey Cooperman (2-0) earned the win in working five innings of relief. He gave up a run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Howie Deemer also pitched in relief.
