Mountain Lions Push No. 3 Barton to the Brink in Postseason Clash

After an impressive first-round win, the Young Harris College women's tennis team saw its run in the 2025 Conference Carolinas Tournament come to a close on Friday (Apr. 25) afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Center. The Mountain Lions battled hard against the No. 3-seeded Barton College Bulldogs, pushing the match to the wire before falling 4-3 in a thrilling quarterfinal clash. 

Young Harris dropped a tightly contested doubles point to open the match but showed incredible resilience in singles play, storming back to tie things up at 3-3 before Barton narrowly clinched the deciding point. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Mountain Lions' top doubles team of Simone Mercier and Futaba Saito got YH off to a strong start, delivering a dominant 6-2 victory over Barton's No. 1 pair. 

  • On court three, Andreia Semeano and Callie Stanfield dropped a close 6-4 decision to Barton's Mavi and Hellum-Lilleengen, as the Bulldogs narrowly captured the doubles point. 

  • Young Harris showed no quit in singles play. At the top spot, Simone Mercier took down Barton's Tilde Howeler in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) to tie the match at one point apiece. 

  • Barton answered back at No. 2 singles, where Maud Scholten fell 1-6, 2-6 to Fernandez. 

  • Barton earned its third point at No. 5 singles, as Andreia Semeano fell 1-6, 3-6. 

  • Futaba Saito delivered a gutsy comeback on court four, taking down Barton's Irma Granstam in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) to bring the Mountain Lions within one. 

  • Callie Stanfield capped off her strong tournament showing with a three-set win at No. 6 singles (5-7, 7-5, 6-4), knotting the match at 3-3 and setting up a dramatic finish. 

  • In a marathon match on court three, Viviana Gomez battled to three sets against Barton's Ruya Mavi, ultimately falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (7-9) in one of the most competitive showdowns of the afternoon. 

  • Ultimately, Barton's Mavi outlasted Gomez to seal the match and move the Bulldogs into the semifinals.

With the 2025 season now complete, Young Harris closes the year after a spirited showing at the Conference Carolinas Tournament, including a dominant opening-round victory over Francis Marion and a thrilling quarterfinal battle against Barton. The Mountain Lions will look to build off this postseason momentum heading into next year.
