YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. Young Harris fed off a career night from
Karl Chavis to overcome an 11-point second half deficit to defeat King University 82-80 (Feb 19
th). Whenever it felt like King was beginning to pull away, the Mountain Lions always had an answer. It was never easy for YH, as they took their first lead of the second half with 24 seconds left on the clock. At this point,
Karl Chavis was on the free throw line to score his 34
th point of the night. Chavis went on to finish with 35 points, notching a career high. Â
Â
It is important to note that Chavis' career night came in only 28 minutes as he missed the final 11:46 of the first half after picking up his third personal foul. He went onto play the entire second half after only committing one foul en route to taking over the game. Â
Â
After a career night on the glass,
Carl Cleveland is three rebounds shy of the program record.Â
Â
The Mountain Lions advance to 18-7 overall and are 13-4 in Conference Carolinas. The Tornado move to 16-11 overall and are 14-5 in Conference Carolinas. Â
Â
QUOTING HEAD COACH JEREMY CURRIER:Â
"We were really good down the stretch, and we have closed out a number of close games. Both these guys [
Karl Chavis &
Carl Cleveland] had career nights; A career-high 35 points for
Karl Chavis and 17 rebounds for
Carl Cleveland. But overall, we had a lot of guys step up. Our team keeps responding and I am really proud of them."
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:Â
·     Â
Karl Chavis' 35 points came on an efficient 11-19 from the field and 11-15 from the stripe. Â
·      Often when great players struggle from the field they may shut down, however, that was not the case for
Carl Cleveland. While he only shot 2-12, he was able to grab a career-high 17 rebounds. Cleveland notched a double-double scoring night with 11 points, getting to the line eight times and converting on six of those opportunities. Â
·      Coach Currier will certainly appreciate his team's ability to put up 21 assists on 25 made field goals.  Â
·      Young Harris forced King into 13 turnovers, which may not be an eye-popping number, however, it seemed like those turnovers came just at the right time when the Mountain Lions really needed a stop.Â
·     Â
Brayden Baker gave the Mountain Lions some valuable playing time. He secured four rebounds and went 3-4 from the charity stripe in 10 minutes of playing time.Â
·     Â
John Maxwell deserves a shoutout as well as he has come on as of late to give the Mountain Lions another guy to fly around the court on the defensive end while steadying the pace on the offensive side. Â
·     Â
Cole Deptula hit a clutch three-pointer with 1:45 left on the clock to cut the Tornado lead to one. At the time King had just regained momentum, if that shot had not fallen and the Tornado secured the rebound, it is unknown what could have happened the rest of the game. Â
·      King was led by Jordan Akal's 29 points on 8-18 from the field to go along with six rebounds. Â
Â
UP NEXT:Â The Mountain Lions will hit the road this Saturday (Feb 22
nd) to take on Lees-McRae at 4PM. Â
