YOUNG HARRIS, GA. | Young Harris won a back-and-forth thriller in the first round of the conference tournament, ultimately defeating Lees-McRae College 3-2 (Nov 7
th).
Thomas Kleinpenning came up huge in the 87
th minute, finding the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.
After defeating the #8 seeded Bobcats, the Mountain Lions are 1-0 in tournament play and advance to the Conference Carolinas Quarterfinals!
QUOTING HEAD COACH DEAN GRAY:
"It's tournament soccer, big emotions and high energy for 90 minutes. We controlled the first half and should have added a couple more with the chances created. In the second half, we struggled off the ball to find a consistent press. Fortunately, we dug deep and found a way to move on to the next round."
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Young Harris jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to an assist by Bjorn Jonasson, and goal by Filip Zander (27:18).
- Just over 10 minutes later, Charlie Wilde found the back of the net off a pass from Thomas Kleinpenning. YHC was up 2-0 heading into halftime.
- In the 2nd half, the Bobcats slowly crawled back. Laurin Boettcher (68:55) and Conor Hart (82:26) were the goal scorers for Lees-McRae.
- With three minutes left in regulation, Thomas Kleinpenning's shot (87:39) in the lower left corner of the goal put the Mountain Lions on top 3-2.
- YHC goalkeeper Stathis Paplomatos came up big with three crucial saves this evening to stop the Bobcat offense.
- Young Harris took 17 shots to Lees-McRae's 11.
