YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College men's basketball team will open their 2022-23 season Friday (Nov. 11) when they travel to Franklin Springs, Georgia, for a 5 p.m. contest against Chowan University.
INSIDE THE SCHEDULE:
- The 28-game schedule, includes 13 games inside the friendly confines of the Harp Recreation and Commencement Center.
- The Mountain Lions will have six games this season against teams ranked in the preseason National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Top 25 poll or receiving votes. YHC will face No. 2-ranked Augusta University in a home-and home series with their Peach Belt Conference opponent. The Mountain Lions will host the Jaguars Jan. 7 in the Enchanted Valley and make the trip to Augusta Feb. 11. Young Harris will also have two games each against Columbus State University and Flagler College in 2022-23. All of those teams were receiving votes in the NABC poll.
- The Mountain Lions have five new opponents this season on their schedule. Chowan is a first-time opponent for Young Harris. The Mountain Lions will play at Mars Hill University Nov. 16 before opening their home portion of the schedule Nov. 22 against the Lions. They will also face Erskine College Nov. 19 in Salisbury, North Carolina, at the Catawba Classic. YHC will play a home-and-home series with the University of Virginia's College at Wise. The two teams will play Dec. 4 in Wise, Virginia, before coming to the Enchanted Valley on New Year's Eve. The Mountain Lions will play a home contest against Salem University Feb. 13 in The Harp.
- After the season opener against the Hawks, the Mountain Lions will face Emmanuel (Ga.) College Nov. 12. They will also face North Greenville University Nov. 18 at the Catawba College. The all-time series with the Lions is tied at 1, while the series with the Crusaders is knotted at 2.
- The Mountain Lions will close out 2022 with four home games. YHC opens up Peach Belt play with a Dec. 10 home game against Georgia College at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Flagler College in a 1 p.m. contest Dec. 12. The Mountain Lions will recognize their 2022 YHC Athletics Hall of Fame Classic when they face GC and host their annual Education Day game against Flagler. Georgia College holds an 11-8 lead in the all-time series with YHC is up 8-5 in the Flagler series.
- Young Harris will host Southern Wesleyan University in its final contest before the holiday break Nov. 14. The series against the Warriors is tied at 2.
- After their home game against UVA Wise Dec. 31, the Mountain Lions will play four of the next five games on the road. They will face Clayton State University Jan. 4, Columbus State Jan. 11, Flagler Jan. 14 and Georgia College on the road, while they will host Augusta Jan. 7. YHC leads the all-time series against Clayton State (12-6) and Columbus State (11-9) and trails against Augusta (12-4).
- A home game against the University of South Carolina-Aiken is slotted for Jan. 21 before Young Harris travels to Dalonega, Georgia, to face its Blood Mountain rival University of North Georgia Jan. 25 and to Americus, Georgia, to face Georgia Southwestern State University Jan. 28. USC Aiken leads the series with the Mountain Lions 8-6, while Georgia Southwestern holds a 10-9 lead in the series. The Mountain Lions had a 16-8 advanted against UNG.
- The Mountain Lions return to the Harp for three consecutive home games against Lander University Feb. 1, Clayton State Feb. 4 and Columbus State Feb. 8. Lander holds a 10-7 advantage in the series with YHC.
- Young Harris will wrap up the season with road games against Augusta (Feb. 11), USC Aiken (Feb. 18) and Lander (Feb. 22) and home contests against Salem (Feb. 13), North Georgia (Feb. 15) and Georgia Southwestern (Feb. 25). The Georgia Southwestern contest will serve as Homecoming and Senior Day for the Mountain Lions.
- The Peach Belt Tournament will be held the first week in March with the top eight teams advancing. The quarterfinals will be played March 2 with the semifinals scheduled for March 3 and the finals on March 5. All tournament games will be played at the No. 1 seed.
