YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Ava Jones and Kayla Langley combined for 44 points to rally Georgia Southwestern State University to a 71-68 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory ovwr Young Harris College Saturday (Jan. 29) afternoon at the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.
The Hurricanes improved to 16-3 overall and to 9-2 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 11-9 and 3-8. Young Harris begins a three-game road trip Wednesday (Feb. 2) when they travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, for a noon Education Day game against No. 5-ranked Lander University,
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Young Harris led for all but four minutes and 21 seconds.
- Mackenzie Johnson led the Mountain Lions with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Niaya White added 19 points, eight reboundsa and three steals,
- Carly Winters finished in double figured with 13 points and five steals.
- Kalen Surles added eight points, eight rebounds and five assists.
- Young Harris hit nine of its first 14 shots (64.3 percent) in the opening 10 minutes as the Mountain Lions opened an 23-11 lead.
- Georgia Southwestern pulled to within six at halftime (33-27) and trailed by eight points (52-44) entering the fourth quarter.
- The Hurricanes shot 60 percent (9-of-15) in the final 10 minutes to outscore Young Harris 27-16 in the fourth quarter.
- GSW took the lead for good at 63-61 on Jones' jumper with 2:12 remaining and extended its lead to as many as seven (69-62) with 19 seconds left.
- Young Harris closed to within three points (71-68) after back-to-back three pointers from Johnson and White, but ran out of time.Â
