No 20 Mountain Lions hold off Railsplitters 3-2

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College scored three unanswered goals before Lincoln Memorial University rallied for two goals in the final 10 minutes as the 20th-ranked Mountain Lions took a 3-2 non-conference men's soccer victory Wednesday (Sept. 8) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

Young Harris improved to 2-0-0, while the Railsplitters fell to 1-2-0. The Mountain Lions continue the homestand Saturday (Sept. 11) with a 5 p.m. match against Limestone University.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The match was delayed for 60 minutes at the beginning due to a lightning delay.
  • The Mountain Lions wasted little time after the delay as Sondre Olsen scored twice in the opening 19 minutes.
  • Olsen gave YHC a 1-0 lead at the 3:36 mark. Quinn Thompson threw the ball into Federico Gutierrez at the right post. Gutierrez headed the ball across the box to Olsen, who headed the ball for the score.
  • Olsen doubled the lead at the 19:03 mark after he took a pass from Saad Maziane on the left side, settled the ball and knocked it in from the left side of the box.
  • YHC took a 3-0 lead in the 55th minute when Quinn Thompson served the ball into Joel Whittingham in the center of the box and Whittingham headed it in the back of the net.
  • LMU got a goal back in the 80th minute on the Railsplitters' first shot on goal as Pedro da Silva curled a direct kick from 19 yards out into the top right corner of the net.
  • The Railsplitters pulled within on on Will Arrowood's goal with 53 seconds left.
  • Young Harris held a 20-9 edge on shots, including a 9-4 margin on goal.
  • YHC had an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
  • Eduardo D'Avino collected two saves in the YHC goal.
