No. 10 Young Harris homers way past UNC Pembroke 7-3 in PBC Tournament semifinals

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Morgan Curley and Haylie Shope each homered as No. 10 Young Harris College defeated the University of North Carolina at Pembroke 7-3 in the semifinlas of the Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament Saturday (May 8) afternoon at the YHC Softball FIeld.

The second-seeded Mountain Lions improved to 31-9 and advances to next Saturday's (May 15) championship game in Dahlonega, Georgia, against top seed University of North Georgia. A start time will be announced later. The third-seed Braves end their 2021 campaign at 26-13.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • UNC Pembroke opened up with a three-run first inning before the Mountain Lions got a run back in the second inning on Curley's home run to straightaway center field. It was her fifth homer of the season.
  • The Mountain Lions regained the lead at 5-3 after Shope connected on a grand slam to left-center field in the third. It was her team-leading 11th homer of the year. All four runs were unearned as YHC took advantage off a UNCP error that kept the inning alive.
  • Young Harris added an insurance run in the fifth after the fourth Brave error of the game.
  • The Mountain Lions added their final run in the sixth as Emily Harris singled and came home on a Jill Torres' double to center.
  • Reliever Sam Davis (9-4) pitched 6.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Davis also struck out four and allowed just one hit.
  • Biz Walters, Torres and Emily Harris each collected two hits.
  • Young Harris is 4-5 all-time in Peach Belt Tournament games.
  • This will be the first PBC Tournament championship appearance for the Mountain Lions.
