No. 2 Nighthawks edge No. 8 Mountain Lions 3-1 in PBC Tournament final

DAHLONEGA, Ga. | No. 2-ranked University of North Georgia scored three times in the second inning en route to a 3-1 victory over Young Harris College Saturday (May 15) afternoon in the championship game of the Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.

The Nighthawks earn the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament as they improved to 37-5. The Mountain Lions fell to 31-10 and are expected to earn an at-large berth to the tournament when the 48-team field is announced on NCAA.com at 10 p.m. Sunday (May 16),

INSIDIE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Young Harris' Jill Torres, Emily Harris, Morgan Curley and Haylie Shope were named to the All-PBC Tournament team.
  • North Georgia scored three times in the second as the Nighthawks took advantage of one of three YHC errors. Shelby Hammontree had a sacrifice fly to drive in UNG's second run and Olivia Sinquefield added an RBI double to left-center field.
  • The Mountain Lions had runners in second and fourth innings before they struck for an unearned run in the fifth on Carly Rigsbee's RBI single. YHC had a chance to add more runs with the bases loaded, but pinch runner Karah Straub was called out for running into the UNG shortstop on a ground ball to end the inning.
  • Sam Davis (9-5) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
  • Jill Torres and Rigsbee had the hits for the Mountain Lions, who stranded seven runners on base.
