Nighthawks win twice to claim PBC Tournament semifinals

DAHLONEGA, Ga. | The University of North Georgia won twice Saturday (May 8) afternoon to win its Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament semifinal series with Young Harris College at Bob Stein Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.

The 25th-ranked Nighthawks won the opener 6-3 to force the if-necessary game three. UNG rallied for a 12-10 victory in the deciding game.

North Georgia improved to 30-13 and advances to next weekend's championship series, while the Mountain Lions ended their season at 23-18.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • Young Harris scored three runs in the eighth inning to close the deficit to two runs at 5-3. 
  • The Mountain Lions didn't get their first hit until Brett Hawkins' double to left-center field with two outs in the eighth inning. Hawkins' hit drove in Cole Jackson, who had reached on a walk. Brandon Jolliff followed by a two-run single to right-center field.
  • McLain Harris (6-3) took the loss as he struck out seven in eight innings.
Game 2
  • The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 10-5 lead as Young Harris scored 10 runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. YHC scored four times each in the fifth and seventh innings and two more in the sixth.
  • After T.J. Byrd led off the fifth with a single, Jolliff followed with a two-run homer to left-center field. It was his second homer of the season. Dahlton Cash added a RBI double to right field and Jackson Jones contributed a run-scoring single.
  • Jolliff singled in the sixth and scored on Logan Worley's homer to left field to give the Mountain Lions a 6-5 lead. It was Worley's fourth homer of 2021.
  • YHC expanded its lead to 10-5 in th seventh. Noah Fitzgerald had an RBI single before Byrd drove in two runs with his single through left side. Jolliff drove in the final run for the Mountain Lions with a single.
  • North Georgia rallied for seven runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to claim the win.
  • Young Harris collected 15 hits, including three each from Fitzgerald and Jolliff. Cash and Byrd added two hits apiece.
  • Reliever Levi Ayers (0-2) took the loss.
