DAHLONEGA, Ga. | Sara King pitched a three-hit shutout for No. 8 Young Harris College as the Mountain Lions defeated Anderson (S.C.) University 1-0 in an elimination game Thursday (May 20) evening at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional being played at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.
The Mountain Lions (33-11), who are the No. 3 seed in the six-team double-elimination tournament, were sent to the elimination bracket after losing a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to No. 5 Lincoln Memorial University earlier in the day.
Young Harris will face No. 5 seed Tusculum University in a 3 p.m. elimination game Friday (May 21).
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
vs. Anderson (S.C.)
- King (8-3) allowed three hits, two walks and two strikeouts in her 72-pitch effort. She faced trouble in the fifth and seventh innings. The Trojans put together two hits to lead off the fifth and a hit and a walk to start the seventh, but in both spots wiggled out of further trouble.
- Young Harris got the lone run they needed in the bottom of the fifth. Lindley Bruce started the uprising with a double down the left field line and moved to third on Sutton Long's ground out. Bruce scored on a fielding error on Biz Walters ground ball.
- YHC only had four hits in the game. Bruce led the way with two, while Shope and Natalie Corbin had one each.
vs. Lincoln Memorial
- Shope gave the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead with her solo home run off the video/scoreboard in right-center field in the second inning.
- Young Harris, which left eight runners on base, had chances to add to its lead in the fourth and fifth innings. Maddie Urquiola had a singled and moved over to third on a double off the bat of Sutton Long, but they were stranded after LMU got Corbin to pop up. In the next inning, Walters and Jill Torres led off with singles and then were moved up 60 feet on Carly Rigsbee's sacrifice bunt. The inning ended when Walters was called out for leaving third base early after Shope flied out to left.
- Lincoln Memorial scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on two hits and two YHC errors to take a 2-1 lead.
- Jill Dixon (11-2) took the loss in the circle as she allowed just six hits and two runs (one earned).
- Urquiola led Young Harris with two hits, while Corbin, Walters, Torres, Shope and Long had one hit each.
