No. 8 Young Harris ends season at NCAA Southeast Regional

Mountain Lions fall to No. 2 UNG 5-3 after beating Tusculum 4-2

DAHLONEGA, Ga. | The No. 8 Young Harris College softball team saw their season come to the end at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Friday (May 21) afternoon.

The Mountain Lions, the No. 3 seed in the six-team double-elimination tournament, eliminated No. 5 seed Tusculum University 4-2 in the opening game of the day before. No. 2-ranked and No. 2-seed University of North Georgia held on for a 5-3 victory over Young Harris.

YHC ended its 2021 season with a 34-12 record.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

vs. North Georgia
  • After North Georgia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Jill Torres gave the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead with her 12th homer - a two-run shot to right-center field.
  • North Georgia took advantage of a YHC error in the top of the fourth inning to score four runs (three unearned) to open up a 5-2 lead. Shelby Hammontree had the big hit with a two-run single up the middle.
  • The Mountain Lions pulled to within two runs at 5-3 after Torres connected on her second home run of the game and 13th of the season to center field.
  • Torres led YHC with two hits.
  • Jill Dixon (11-3) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
vs. Tusculum
  • After spotting Tusculum an early 2-0 lead, the Mountain Lions tied the game at 2 in the fourth. Torres walked before Carly Rigsbee doubled up the middle to put runners at second and third. Haylie Shope followed with a two-run single down the left field line.
  • Lindley Bruce led off the fifth inning with a home run to left field to give the Mountain Lions a 3-2 lead. It was her first long ball of 2021.
  • Morgan Curley added an insurance run in the sixth for the Mountain Lions with her homer to right-center field. It was the sixth of the season for Curley.
  • Shope (4-0) earned the win in the circle as she pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless relief. She scattered four hits, while walking two and striking out two.
  • Curley led YHC with two hits.
