No. 11 YHC, No. 1 North Georgia split doubleheader

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | No. 11 Young Harris College and No. 1 University of North Georgia split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday (April 3) afternoon at the YHC Softball Field.

The Nighthawks hit three homers to win the opener 6-4, before the Mountain Lions won the nightcap in the bottom of the ninth inning 10-9.

Young Harris improved to 21-6 overall and to 9-1 in the PBC, while North Georgia slipped to 18-2 and 5-1.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • Young Harris jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as the Mountain Lions took advantage of three UNG miscues.
  • North Georgia took a 6-1 lead as they scored five runs in the second and one more in the third.
  • YHC's Haylie Shope got the Mountain Lions back to within two runs at 6-4 as she connected on her sixth homer of the season - a two-run shot left field - in the third.
  • Biz Walters had two of the four hits for the Mountain Lions.
  • Sam Davis (7-4) took the loss in the circle.
Game 2
  • The nightcap was an offensive affair as the teams combined for 28 hits (YHC 15, UNG 13) and took 3 hours and 20 minutes.
  • North Georgia opened up with a four-run first inning before YHC scored three times in its half. Carly Rigsbee had a sacrifice fly while the Mountain Lions scored their other run on UNG errors.
  • YHC took a 6-5 lead in the third inning with three runs. Katelynn Hodges had a sacrifice fly and Maddie Urquiola and Natalie Corbin had RBI hits.
  • After the Nighthawks took a 7-6 lead with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, the Mountain Lions pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. Jill Torres tied the game at 7 on a sacrifice fly before Rigsbee slapped a two-run homer to left. It was her fifth of 2021.
  • North Georgia tied the game at 9 with two runs in the top of the seventh.
  • Young Harris had changes to win the game in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings as they loaded the bases in each inning.  YHC pushed across the winning run on Shope's infield single in the ninth.
  • Corbin, Ashley Autuori and Morgan Curley had three hits each, while Shope had two.
  • Davis (8-4) earned the win as she pitched three scoreless relief innings.
