No. 9 Mountain Lions sweep doubleheader from Patriots

FLORENCE, S.C. | The ninth-ranked Young Harris College softball team swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Francis Marion University Sunday (April 25) afternoon at the FMU Softball Stadium.

The Mountain Lions improved to 29-8 overall and to 16-2 in the Peach Belt after recording 8-2 and 8-2 wins over the Patriots, who fell to 10-20 and 6-12.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • Young Harris jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring three runs in both the first and second innings.
  • Jill Torres hit a two-run homer - her 10th of the season - to center field in the first. Haylie Shope also her 10th long ball of 2021 with a solo shot to right-center field.
  • Morgan Curley led off the second with a home run to center field. It was her third of the season. Biz Walters drove in a run on a ground out and another run scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the seventh on back-to-back RBI doubles from Carly Rigsbee and Shope.
  • Walters, Torres, Shope and Curley each collected two hits.
  • Walters clubbed a triple in the seventh inning.
  • Sara King (7-2) earned the win. She allowed two unearned runs in 5.2 innings.

Game 2
  • Jill Dixon (10-1) twirled a three-hit shutout in her complete-game victory. She recorded six strikeouts.
  • Torres gave YHC a 1-0 lead in the first on her RBI ground out.
  • The Mountain Lions broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning, Curley, Emily Harris, Natalie Corbin and Torres had run-scoring singles, while Walters drove in a run on her ground out.
  • Young Harris added solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Harris had an RBI single up the middle in the fifth and pinch hitter Lindley Bruce added a sactifice fly in the seventh.
  • Curley led the Mountain Lions' 13-hit attack with three hits, while Harris and Corbin had two apiece.
