No. 9 YHC, UNCP split doubleheader

PEMBROKE, N.C. | No. 9 Young Harris College and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Friday (April 23) afternoon at the UNCP Softball Field.

The Mountain Lions won the opener 7-4 before the Braves claimed the nightcap 8-3.

Young Harris improved to 27-8 overall and to 14-2 in the Peach Belt, while UNC Pembroke fell to 22-10 and 10-4.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • The Mountain Lions broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. Carly Rigsbee drove in the first run with an RBI double and Haylie Shope followed with a two-run homer to left field. Natalie Corbin added a two-run single later in the inning before Young Harris scored its final run on a passed ball.
  • Young Harris added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI infield single by Morgan Curley.
  • Sara King (6-2) earned the win for the Mountain Lions as she struck out five in 4.1 innings.
  • Sam Davis pitched the final 2.2 scoreless innings for YHC as she recorded a save.
  • Young Harris collected 10 hits. Jill Torres, Curley and Katelynn Hodges led the Mountain Lions with two hits each

Game 2
  • Young Harris scored twice in the top of the first inning. Carly Rigsbee drove in a run on a ground out and Ashley Autuori added an RBI single.
  • UNC Pembroke scored five runs (two earned) in the bottom of the inning to take control of game.
  • The Mountain Lions added a run in the seventh on a Maddie Urquiola single down the left field line.
  • Mountain Lions had 11 hits, but only went 5-of-17 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14 runners on base.
  • Biz Walters and Urquiola each led YHC with three hits each.
  • Jill Dixon (9-1) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
