Torres hit three homers as No. 15 YHC sweeps pair from Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. | Jill Torres swatted three home runs as No. 15 Young Harris College swept Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Lander University Saturday (March 20) afternoon at Doug Spears Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 17-4 overall and to 6-0 in the Peach Belt as they won by scores of 17-5 (five innings) and 8-4. Lander fell to 11-7 and 0-2.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • The Mountain Lions scored in every inning, including back-to-back six run frames in the third and fourth innings.
  • YHC hit four homers in the game, Torres hit a pair of two-run homers, while Maddie Urquiola added a two-run shot of her own. Haylie Shope contributed a solo shot.
  • The Mountain Lions had 15 hits in the opener, with seven going for extra bases.
  • Natalie Corbin, Biz Walters, Torres, Shope, Urquiola, Sutton Long and Emily Harris each had two hits.
  • Torres led YHC with 4 RBI, while Urquiola had three. Walters, Shope and Harris each drove in two runs.
  • Sam Davis (6-2) earned the win in the circle.
Game 2
  • Alanna Dunson and Long had solo home runs in the second as YHC took a 2-0 lead.
  • Young Harris broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning to give the Mountain Lions a 7-4 lead. The inning was highlight by a grand slam from Torres. It was her team-leading eighth homer of 2021.
  • Dunson added an insurance run in the seventh with her long ball to lead off the inning.
  • Corbin, Dunson and Harris had two hits apiece.
  • Sara King (2-1) earned the win with three innings of relief.
