YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The 17th-ranked Young Harris College softball team earned a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep over Columbus State University Saturday (March 13) afternoon at the YHC Softball Field.
The Mountain Lions won the opener 6-2 before taking a 7-3 nightcap victory.
Young Harris improved to 15-4 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt, while the Cougars fell to 10-8 and 0-2.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
Game 1
- Young Harris took a 1-0 lead on a Carly Rigsbee sacrifice fly in the first inning.
- After Columbus State scored twice in the top of the third, Jill Torres smacked a two-run homer to left field to reclaim a 3-2 lead for the Mountain Lions.Â
- YHC added three insurance runs in the fifth. Rigsbee had an RBI double to left-center field, while Alanna Dunson drove in two more with a double to left.
- Natalie Corbin collected two of the six hits for the Mountain Lions.
- Sam Davis (5-2) earned the win in the circle for YHC. She scattered seven hits and struck out nine in the complete-game effort.
Game 2
- Young Harris jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Mountain Lions scored their first run on a wild pitch before Haylie Shope roped a two-run single to right-center field.
- Shope drove in the fourth run for YHC on a bases-loaded walk in the second.
- The Mountain Lions added another run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch and Dunson drove in another on a ground out to give Young Harris a 6-1 lead.
- Torres smacked another homer - a leadoff shot to right field - to start the sixth inning. It was Torres' fifth long ball of 2021.
- Biz Walters had three hits, including second inning triple.
- Torres and Shope added two hits each.
- Jill Dixon (5-0) earned the win as she struck out five in four innings, while Sara King earned her second save of 2021 with three scoreless innings in relief.
