YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The No. 17 Young Harris College softball team opened up Peach Belt Conference action with a doubleheader sweep over the University of South Carolina-Aiken Thursday (March 11) afternoon at the YHC Softball Field.
Maddie Urquiola hit a two-run homer as the Mountain Lions took the opener 4-0, while Urquiola and
Carly Rigsbee each hit a long ball as Young Harris defeated the Pacers 9-1 in five innings in the nightcap.
The Mountain Lions improved to 13-4 overall and to 2-0 in the league, while the Pacers dropped to 0-2 and 0-2.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
Game 1
- The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the first on Haylie Shope's RBI single up the middle.
- Urquiola hit her third homer of the season - a two-run shot down the left field line - in the fourth inning.
- YHC closed out the scoring on a Jill Torres' ground out in the fifth.
- Natalie Corbin had two of the six hits for the Mountain Lions, while Biz Walters, Shope, Urquiola and Sutton Long had one each.
- Sam Davis (4-2) twirled the complete-game shutout in the circle for the Mountain Lions. She allowed just five hits and struck out five.
Game 2
- Young Harris scored in every inning in the nightcap.
- YHC took a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a USC Aiken throwing error before doubling its lead on Urquiola's leadoff long ball to start the second inning. It was Urquiola's fourth homer of the season.
- The Mountain Lions broke the game open with a five-run third inning. Rigsbee lef off with a homer to left. It was her second of 2021. Long drove in two more with with a double to left-center. Corbin knocked in a run on a ground out before Walters added an RBI single up the middle.
- Long added another RBI double in the fourth before Shope ended the game early with a fifth-inning RBI single.
- Walters, Urquiola and Shope led the YHC 13-hit attack with three hits apiece, while Long ended up with three RBI.
- Jill Dixon (4-0) went the distance for the Mountain Lions in the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out eight.
