McKeever wins 200th match as Mountain Lions clip Nighthawks

DAHLONEGA, Ga. | Young Harris College men's soccer coach Mark McKeever won his 200th match as the Mountain Lions opened their delayed 2020 season with a 2-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over the University of North Georgia Monday (Feb. 8) afternoon at the UNG Soccer Complex.

The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0-0 overall and to 1-0-0 in the Peach Belt, while the Nighthawks fell to 0-2-0 and 0-2-0.

  • With the victory, McKeever, who is in his 16th season as head coach at YHC, is now 200-70-14 (.729 winning percentage).
  • Since 2012, the Mountain Lions are 121-27-7 (.803 winning percentage), During that time the Mountain Lions capture five Peach Belt regular-season titles, four PBC Tournament championships and five appearances in the NCAA Tournament. YHC, which has been ranked as No. 1 in the country during the 2014 and 2018 seasons, reached the national quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament in both 2014 and 2018, capturing the Southeast Region title in 2018.
  • Young Harris took a 1-0 lead just 56 seconds into the match. Val Feeney's corner kick was cleared. Ben Mackay's shot ws deflected wide to Tony Barry, who crossed it from the right side and Saad Maziane slotted the ball into the bottom of the next.
  • After UNG tied the match at 1 in the 27th minute, Maziane pushed the ball into Sondre Olsen, who found the goal to give YHC a 2-1 lead at the 36:08 mark.
  • The Mountain Lions held a 10-5 advantage on shots, including a 7-2 margin on goal.
  • Young Harris held a 9-3 advantage on corner kicks. All nine for the Mountain Lions came in the opening 45 minutes.
  • YHC netminder Eduardo D'Avino had one save.
