Mountain Lions wins pair on final day of Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The sixth-ranked Young Harris College softball team concluded the final day of the Charger Chillout Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon.

The Mountain Lions defeated No. 10 Trevecca Nazarene University in the opener 15-5 in five innings, while they took the nightcap over Union (Tenn.) University 12-2.

Young Harris improved to 4-0 after the opening weekend.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

vs. No. 10 Trevecca Nazarene
  • This was the first of 11 games for the Mountain Lions against teams ranked the preseason National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II preseason top 25 poll.
  • The Mountain Lions scored at least two runs in every inning against the Trojans.
  • Every starter for Young Harris except one had at least one hit and drove in a run.
  • Emily Harris and Haylie Shope led the 16-hit attack for the Mountain Lions with three hits apiece. Biz Walters, Jill Torres and Katelynn Hodges added two hits each.
  • Torres led YHC with three runs driven in, while Harris, Shope and Hodges each drove in a pair.
  • Shope and Hodges led off the fourth with back-to-back home runs. Shope's long ball went to right field, while Hodges' blast went to left-center field.
  • Reliever Jill Dixon (1-0) earned the win for the Mountain Lions as she threw the final 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
vs. Union 
  • After three scoreless innings, the Mountain Lion broke the game open with a six-run fourth. Ashley Autuori started the rally with a two-run double to left and Shea Bayreuther added a two-run double to left-center. Natalie Corbin and Harris followed with run-scoring singles.
  • Harris and Morgan Curley led the Mountain Lions, who had 13 hits, with three hits apiece. Autuori and Corbin added two hits each. 
  • Harris and Autuori led YHC with three RBI apiece.
  • Young Harris collected four doubles in the win.
  • In her first appearance in the circle for YHC, Ireland Cavanaugh (1-0) pitched a complete game. She scattered six hits in the win.
