No. 6 Mountain Lions split pair of games

YHC defeats Mississippi College 6-5, falls to West Alabama 7-4

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. | The sixth-ranked Young Harris College softball split a pair of games played Friday (Feb. 12) afternoon at Sand Mountain Park.

The Mountain Lions won the opener against Mississippi College 6-5 before suffering their first loss of the season as the University of West Alabama rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-4 decision.

Young Harris fell to 5-1 with the split.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

vs. Mississippi College
  • The Mountain Lions scored all six runs in their final two at-bats, scoring four times in the sixth inning and adding two more in the seventh.
  • Trailing 2-0 entering the sixth inning, Maddie Urquiola led off with a home run for YHC. Shea Bayreuther who followed with single eventually scored on a passed ball to knot the game at 2. The Mountain Lions added an unearned run before Biz Walters drove in a run with a single to right field.
  • The Choctaws tied the game at 4 in their half of the sixth with two runs.
  • Emily Harris drove in two runs in the seventh on a single to center field to give YHC a 6-4 lead. Harris drove in Karah Straub and Urquiola, who both drew walks off reliever Avery Sanders.
  • Mississippi College got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but YHC reliever Jill Dixon earned her first save by getting the final two outs.
  • Sam Davis earned the win in the circle for the Mountain Lions.
  • Walters had three of the 11 YHC hits, while Harris, Morgan Curley, Urquiola, and Bayreuther had two hits each.

vs. West Alabama
  • Young Harris took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the Mountain Lions took advantage of a Tiger miscue.
  • West Alabama tied the game at 2 in the third inning and took the lead 3-2 with an unearned run in sixth inning.
  • The Mountain Lions reclaimed the lead in their half of the sixth at 4-3. Harris tied the game at 3 on a RBI single, before pinch runner Natalie Corbin scored on a wild pitch to give YHC a 4-3 advantage.
  • The Tigers tied the game at 4 in the seventh on a RBI single by pinch hitter Lexy House and took the lead for good on Chrissy Tubbs' sacrifice fly. Nicole Bucci closed out the scoring with a two-run single.
  • Kaleigh Crutchfield earned the win in relief for UWA, while Hannah Mynard earned the save with a 1-2-3 seventh. Sara King took the loss in relief.
  • Harris and Ashley Autuori led the Mountain Lions with two hits each, while Walters, Jill Torres, and Straub had one hit apiece,
  • Autuori had the lone extra-base hit for Young Harris -  a leadoff double in the sixth.
