Wilde leads No. 5 Mountain Lions over Bearcats 4-1

GREENWOOD, S.C. | Charlie Wilde scored twice to lead No. 5 Young Harris College over Lander University 4-1 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday (Oct. 16) afternoon at Van Taylor Stafium.

The Mountain Lions improved to 12-0-1 overall and to 8-0-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Bearcats fell to 8-5-0 and 5-3-0. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 20) when they host Georgia Southwestern State University in a 7:30 p.m. PBC contest at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field. A win against the Hurricanes will secure the Mountain Lions their sixth PBC title in program history.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Young Harris took a 1-0 lead at the 17:50 mark on Tony Barry's first goal of the season. Riccardo Sambugaro sent a through ball through the center to Barry, who knocked the ball into the left side of the net.
  • The Mountain Lions doubled their lead with just under three minutes left in the first half. Quinn Thompson threw the ball in to Federico Gutierrez, who flicked the ball to Wilde, who was standing near the left post and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
  • After Lander got a goal back, the Mountain Lions thwarted the Bearcat rally when Wilde scored his second goal of the match and season at the 74:37 mark. Barry assisted on the goal.
  • Young Harris got its final goal with just under four minutes left. Val Feeney sent in a corner kick to Gutierrez, who flicked the ball into the right corner of the net. It was Guterriez's third goal of 2021.
  • YHC held an 11-10 edge on shots, including a 5-4 margin on goal.
  • Lander had a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
