ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Flagler College used a 20-3 run late in the second half to rally for an 87-76 Peach Belt Conference men's basketball victory over Young Harris College Saturday (Jan. 9) afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
The Saints improved to 3-2 overall and to 1-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-2 and 1-1. Young Harris hosts the University of North Georgia in its Battle of Blood Mountain rivalry Wednesday (Jan. 13) at 7:30 p.m. in the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.
Young Harris overcame a 45-38 halftime deficit and took its first lead of the second half at 62-61 after
Brian Free connected on two free throws with 11:27 remaining. Back-to-back layups by
Chinecherem Anukaenyi extended the Mountain Lion lead to 66-61 just over a minute later.
After both teams swapped baskets, the Saints broke the game open with a 20-3 run over the next nine minutes. Flagler took the lead for good at 71-69 on a Marcus Henderson three-pointer with 7:08 to play. The Saints, who connected on 15 three-pointers, closed out the rally with an 8-0 run to open up their largest lead of the game - 12 points (83-71) - after another Henderson three-pointer with 66 seconds left.
The Saints, who scored 26 points off 17 YHC turnovers, was led by Henderson's 22 points. Jaizec Lottie added 16 points and 12 assists, while Chase Fiddler and Chris Metzger each contributed 12. Metzger added a team-high eight rebounds.
Free and
Alphonso Willis led the Mountain Lions with 17 points each, while
Jacorie Archie posted 12 points.
Sebby Jean grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as the YHC outrebounded the Saints 47-30.
Karl Chavis alsop pulled down seven rebounds. Jean and Willis also led Young Harris with four assists each.
