YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Mary Deatrick and
Leigh Anne Turner each scored five goals as the Young Harris College women's lacrosse team defeated the University of Virginia's College at Wise 20-15 Sunday (March 1) afternoon at he YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain LIons snapped their three-game losing streak as they improved to 2-3, while the Cavaliers fell to 2-2. Young Harris will host Catawba College Friday (March 6) at 4 p.m.
Young Harris scored four of the first five goals to open up a 4-1 lead after
Taylor Greenberg scored with 24:50 to play UVA-Wise pulled to within two goals at 9-7 with 15:05 to go in the first half, but the Mountain Lions scored six of the next eight top open up a 15-9 lead on a
Channing Milford free-position goal with 6:53 remaining before the half.Â
The Cavaliers got within three at 15-12 but the Mountain Lions reeled off four unanswered goals - two from Turner and one from MIlford and Deatrick - as they took a 19-12 lead with 18 minutes to go.
Young Harris held a 34-33 lead on shots and a 24-13 margin in draw controls, while the Cavaliers held a 24-17 margin in grounds balls.
Greenberg and Milford added three goals each for the Mountain Lions, while
Anna Luckie,
Sierra Haas,
Kelsey Dover and
Aubrie Valvo accounted for a goal apiece. Deatrick distributed three assists, while
Ansley Coles had two and Hass added one.
Dover led YHC with four ground balls, while
Maddy Meyers,
Eryn Brown and Valvo scooped up two apiece. Milford won 10 draw controls, while Deatrick picked up eight.
Meyers tallied 14 saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
